There is no doubt that the Great Wall Haval H3 will appear in the company's lineup, but it will be a little later, but for now we are dealing only with the Hover H3. In 2014, an updated version of the Hover H3 SUV, the Hover H3 new, appeared on the Russian market.

Despite the status of the novelty, the Hover H3 new in China bears several names - Haval H5, and the exterior is taken from the Hover H5 GKC, which appeared back in 2011.

However, in Russia, the Hover H3 new acts as a continuation of the H3 line, not the H5, which in turn means somewhat less rich configurations compared to the older H5 model.

Of course, the huge Hover H3 new grille immediately catches the eye, which turned out this way because the designers removed the bumper jumper connecting the upper and lower grilles of the old H3. Yes, they did not just connect, but also added chrome so that in sunny weather you risk dazzling the drivers traveling to the meeting ... But seriously, the future owner will have to take care of such beauty so that the chrome does not fade in a couple of years. After all, this chrome grille will let through everything that is thrown out from under the wheels by the cars driving in front.

The shape of the optics, bumpers, and fog lights also received new wells. It may seem that the Hover H3 new has become lower than its predecessor, but this is not so, the ground clearance of these models is the same.

Instead of rails on the roof of the old H3, the H3 new uses roof rails - a controversial decision and if we consider this SUV as a family car, it was more convenient to leave the system of the old H3.

On the side, both versions are absolutely identical, with the exception of new moldings at the door edges.

The Hover H3 new uses the H5 fifth door opening system. The rear optics are new, a bit like the optics from the H5, but if you look closely, there are differences in the design. The location of the parking sensors has changed, and the bumper itself is slightly different.

The most important changes to the Hover H3 new lie in the cabin. Even just looking at the photo is enough to understand what these changes are. New harmonious "aluminum" inserts throughout the cabin. Global changes to the panel affected mainly the central part, which is partially taken from the Haval H6 SPORT. The shape of the deflectors has changed, a new audio system with two SD cards, bluetooth support, etc. However, the audio system will differ depending on the configuration (the photo shows the maximum configuration) and in the minimum configurations the owner will have a simpler device.

The seats have changed, which have stronger lateral support. If we consider the leather interior, then the leather has become of better quality, with perforations and stylish red stitching.

The dashboard has barely changed except for a slightly different bezel around the instruments.

In the basic versions, the engine compartment of Hover H3 and Hover H3 new is completely identical, but in the maximum version, a new Mitsubishi 4G63S4T gasoline turbo engine from Lancer Evolution with a volume of 2.0 liters with a capacity of 180 hp is available. torque 250 N * m. Needless to say, with such a motor and 6-speed mechanics, a car weighing almost 2 tons picks up speed quite quickly.

Hower H3 frame

The new frame Chinese Hover H3 (Hower H3) is the handiwork of the automakers of the new Stavropol Auto plant. In addition to replacing the letters "V" with "W" in the name, we found the novelty and other differences from the ancestor of the Great Wall Hover, which left our market not so long ago. Under the hood is now not an atmospheric 128-strong weakling, but a two-liter Mitsubishi 4G63S4T with a capacity of 150 forces with a turbocharger. Hover H3 (Hower H3) frame construction with a rigidly connected front axle, underdrive. The new Hower differs from the Hover in modified optics, bumpers and a huge chrome grille. And Hower H3 did what his older brother did not have time: a frame Stavropol citizen jumped from our springboard ( watch the video).

An easy rebranding (replacing the letter v with w in the name), determining the pricing policy and starting sales - on our test Hower H3, which has already managed to wind 6,500 km on Moscow roads.

The line of frame SUVs of the Great Wall company, (especially the Hover models), has gained fame as an imported alternative to the products of the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant. Affordable price, reliable Japanese filling and more modern than those of direct competitors, the exterior made it possible to sell up to 18 thousand cars annually.

The conflict with the Russian distributor led to the departure of Great Wall from the domestic market - and here the initiative was taken over by the Circassian Derways plant, which had already produced bodies for Hover's. We acquired a license from a Chinese manufacturer to produce up-to-date models, entered into a contract for the supply of components and set up production at the new Stavropol Auto plant.

The future owner of Hower will be "annealed" with a licensed supercharged Mitsubishi 4G63T engine. In the second half of the 1990s, the Lancer Evolution with such engines won the World Rally Championship. The factory power of the motor is 280 hp. with the recommended 98 gasoline. Although the first updated Hovers with a turbo engine boasted a power of 177 hp, later the engine was limited to 150 "horses". A powerful and mischievous engine provokes a dynamic ride: a rear-wheel drive (in normal mode) SUV on dry asphalt is capable of burning rubber.

Opening the trunk, you pay attention to the high loading height (the price of a full-size spare wheel under the floor) and the trunk lid, which does not allow a person taller than 180 cm to stand up at full height.

The volume of the luggage compartment does not boggle the imagination: visually it seems that there will be more free space for luggage in the SUV.

Assessing the comfort of the rear passengers, you remember.

There is enough space in the Hover H3 cabin. According to the old tradition of frame SUVs, the driver sits practically on the floor. He is relatively comfortable, if you do not take into account that the steering wheel is not adjustable for reach, the seat is not ideal. But those who are behind will not like everything. It seems there is a place, but the pillow is very low, and the width is good for two, and the three are cramped. If we compare the dimensions of the Hover N3 cabin with the Patriot, the UAZ is preferable, both in terms of the size of the cabin and the trunk.

Although there is good headroom overhead, the passenger is not constrained in legroom, and in general, the rear row of seats is soundly made, the low setting of the rear sofa leads to an uncomfortable landing.

Continuing the mental comparisons of the Hower H3 -, we can assume that the driving preferences will be given to the Chinese. He has a clearer 6-speed manual transmission and light controls, high-spirited dynamics.

The car is shod in all-season rubber: a common attribute of frame jeeps. The strong point of such a technique is excellent off-road performance and indifference to active and aggressive driving in an urban environment.

Hover H3 test: it's better not to get carried away with speed

The two-liter turbo engine is a real breakthrough. Such dynamics among all-wheel drive vehicles at a price of about a million is still to be found, and this is from the standard 150 hp! The engine is easily boosted to at least 200 hp, or even higher. Look at the size of the turbocharger under the hood. If all the other parts of the transmission can withstand, and the engine does not leave the frame, then without serious modifications this unit can be great to accelerate.

By the way, despite the turbocharger, the Hover H3 can be fueled with 92-m gasoline. The on-board computer is capable of showing only instantaneous consumption, so the data on fuel economy are purely approximate. With a quiet ride in the city and on the highway, 10-12 liters are obtained. But if you go out on an empty road and let the engine run, gasoline disappears from the tank literally before our eyes.

The six-speed gearbox is also a definite blessing - at a speed of 100 km / h at a tachometer of only 2000 rpm, the engine is not particularly stressed, and acoustically, the Hower H3 is noticeably better than the UAZ.

However, it is better not to get carried away with speed. Even in the standard version, the Hower H3 calmly puts the speedometer needle at 180 km / h, while the GPS shows 174. However, after 130 km / h, the off-road vehicle control becomes like a lottery. In a straight line, it flies relatively stably, but if you happen to brake sharply or dodge an obstacle on the road, you need to be extremely careful with this car. Permanent rear-wheel drive, long handlebars and not very comfortable fit are not the best set for such experiments. In part, you can rely on ventilated disc brakes on all wheels - this favorably distinguishes the Chinese from.

We repeat once again: at high speed, in the case of a more difficult maneuver than braking to the floor, the driver is fully responsible for the safety of the car and its occupants.

On slippery roads, the Hower H3 can tickle the nerves of even a trained driver. With extreme maneuvers, the frame is no longer perceived as rigid, but, on the contrary, very roll, and a long steering wheel is not the best help when drifting. Instead of a spectacular skid, the Hower slips with the inner rear wheel when cornering.

Strong rolls, huge inertia, traction dips during switching and the lack of a stabilization system do not inspire optimism - on a slippery road, the Hower H3 risks becoming uncontrollable (or even capsizing) and it is better to refrain from sharp maneuvers in a Chinese car.

The Hover H3 snake test convinced us of the correctness of the conclusion: active “taxiing” between the cones physically exhausts the driver - a very “long” and uninformative steering wheel has to be turned at large angles, which negatively affects the driving experience.

Testing the Hower H3 on rollers, no revelations were expected. The rear-wheel drive car predictably easily slid off the rollers under the front wheels; after the front-wheel drive was firmly connected, there were no problems with the rollers under the rear wheels. True, the lack of a differential will let you down when hanging diagonally. Or not? We drive on two rollers, under the front left and under the rear right wheel, gas, speed increases smoothly ... And the Hover H3, contrary to common sense, passes the test.

After jumping from the springboard, Hower H3 left a double feeling. On the one hand, it is the most comfortable one that we experienced in a jump, but ..! ( Watch the video). During landing, the lip of the front bumper almost clings to the asphalt. For the crossovers we tested, drift after jumping a 6-centimeter sponge is the norm. The only one who left it untouched is the Subaru XV. We expected at least the same from the Hower H3. With its fairly stiff suspension and pretty decent static ground clearance. Under the powerful protection of the engine - 205 mm, and the shape of the bumper altogether hints at a very serious off-road potential.

The driver felt that the suspension worked perfectly - the Hower H3 landed like a featherbed. The rather high-profile wheels and independent front suspension also helped here.

Hower-H3: Speed ​​about 70 km / h, jump from 22 cm - the landing is very comfortable for the driver and passengers. True, from the side it will be clearly visible that very little is left before touching a solid surface.

Hover test H3: what is the balance

The price list for Hower H3 without discounts starts at 990 thousand rubles. A lot, considering that for this money you can get the maximum configuration. On average, the equivalently equipped Hower H3 is 1.5 times more expensive than the Patriot, is it worth overpaying?

Structurally, a Chinese car is preferable: it is better assembled and better painted, it has an engine with great potential and greater variability in the choice of equipment. In turn, the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant promises to return a very appropriate diesel engine to the series and trumps it at an affordable price, both manufacturers juggle with generous discounts.

Without taking into account special offers, the most equipped Hover H3 will cost almost 1.5 million rubles: and even for this price you will not get a stabilization system to curb the temperamental turbo engine - perhaps this is the only thing that prevents you from recommending the Hower H3 for purchase. In other words, the flight is normal, but for the success of the Hover H3 there is clearly not enough adequate price and recognition from those who still remember the letter W in its name.

Design

SUVs are different. Glamorous, non-glamorous, workhorses, lame horses ... Having survived the modernization of the Hover with the H3 index, rather, it resembles a workhorse, but the ubiquitous glamor that, no doubt, made it to Toyota, Honda and even to the tank-like Suzuki Jimny, here if he did, it was not too close. The "Chinese" is clearly not drawn to an automobile beauty contest, although, in fairness, it should be noted that it is more or less modern. After all, the designers from the Celestial Empire thought to make it "like everyone else" by installing a huge, chrome grille with horizontal slats - in the spirit of American cars. And they also did not forget to install large expressive headlights, which give the car some resemblance to huge insects from popular adventure films. Fog lights, by tradition, have a round shape and are hidden in almost rectangular sections.


On the side, the Hover H3 of the 2014 model, like the UAZ Patriot, is boring to the point of impossibility. No frills - everything is clear and to the point. Namely - plastic protective linings on the sidewalls, large alloy wheels with an unpretentious pattern, powerful wheel arches and informative exterior mirrors painted in body color, with integrated turn signals. Behind, too, boredom - nothing special about it is evidenced by the unremarkable vertical lights and ... And more on the "stern", in principle, there is nothing to catch on. This is a workhorse, not a miracle of auto design, what to take from it?

Design

The restyled Hover is based on the same well-proven platform as the pre-reform model. In front of it there is an independent torsion bar suspension, and in the back there is a dependent suspension with four trailing arms with a Panhard rod. All suspension components are powerful, so the car can easily cope with bumps, potholes, cracks and waves on the road, especially at medium speeds. Brakes - disc (front - ventilated).

Adaptation to Russian conditions

For the harsh road realities of Russia, the car is not bad - fortunately, there is an all-wheel drive transmission (the four-wheel drive control buttons are in a convenient place - in the lower part of the center console), and 240 mm ground clearance, and a fuel tank with a very durable body, and protection of the engine compartment, which also covers the checkpoint and razdatka from strikes. Hidden in the engine compartment, the new turbo engine is unpretentious in terms of fuel quality and calmly refers to the 92nd gasoline, which is so relevant in our country. For operation in the cold season, heating of external mirrors, rear glass and seats in the first row is provided, and in addition, climate control is included in each configuration.

Comfort

As soon as you get behind the wheel of the updated Hover H3, you immediately notice the almost complete absence of the unpleasant phenolic smell characteristic of many Chinese cars. The driver's seat is easy to get comfortable - it is soft, with adequate lateral support and adjustable lumbar support. Seat trim - leather or velor. The steering wheel, like other Great Wall H-Series SUVs, is adjustable exclusively for tilt. The dashboard is also standard "Greatwall" - it is clear enough and perfectly readable. The functionality of the on-board computer, unfortunately, has not changed: on the small screen located between the two "wells", the fuel consumption is indicated only in one form - instantaneous. The range of numbers that appear on the screen is very wide (from 0.1 to 29.0 liters), but the average "appetite" still needs to be calculated in your head or using a calculator. In addition, the on-board computer display from time to time there are prompts to increase or decrease the gear, depending on road conditions.


A large two-level box-armrest is installed between the seats of the first row, where you can store personal belongings. Next to it is a cigarette lighter socket (a similar socket is cut into the trunk wall). The gearshift lever on the central tunnel has a nice plastic cladding with an "expensive" texture. Alas, there is nowhere to attach a smartphone for charging - except in the cup holders on the floor tunnel lining. The rear of the passenger compartment is spacious: there is ample knee room, even when it comes to tall passengers. The transmission tunnel will not interfere with the average passenger - it almost does not protrude from the floor. A surprise awaits under the right seat cushion - there the Chinese put a set of tools useful for long journeys. The rear sofa cushion is slightly lower and shorter than necessary, and the backrest is not capable of tilt adjustment, but it can be folded in a 1: 2 ratio. The cargo compartment of the restyled version is no different from the trunk of its predecessor: its area is large, but the "roll-up" curtain is not as high as we would like. However, if you wish, it is enough to remove it, thereby making it easier for yourself the process of loading and unloading your baggage.


In 2010, the Irito company, which is the main importer of Hovers in Russia, conducted Hover H3 crash tests as part of the Chinese Car Safety Program. The tests used the NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) technique, which implies a frontal crash test with 40% overlap at a speed of 64 km / h, which is an imitation of a "live" frontal impact. In these tests, the Hover H3 was able to demonstrate a decent level of protection for the driver and passengers, earning 11.7 points out of 16 (73%). The standard equipment of the "Chinese" is rather modest: it includes front airbags, an anti-lock braking system and a brake force system. Parking sensors, navigation and a rearview camera are available at an additional cost.


The top-end configuration of the Hover H3 has a new multimedia system with a touchscreen display, AUX / USB inputs and Bluetooth for connecting gadgets, as well as an SD slot for loading navigation maps. The graphics and sound of the "multimedia" are acceptable, the image from the rear-view camera is clear, the blue backlighting is not very pleasing to the eye, and the interface is overloaded with unnecessary information, such as, for example, compass, pressure and altitude. The temperature indicator overboard and the brightness control of the touchscreen, as it was, and not. Due to the fact that the brightness of the display cannot be changed, during the day in the sun the numbers are hardly distinguishable, and in the evening their cheerful heavenly radiance is simply annoying. Obviously, the manufacturer still has work to do.

What tricks did the owners of the pre-reform "Hovers" use to make their cars go as expected: they did chip tuning of the engine, installed a mechanical compressor, filled the fuel tank with AI-95 gasoline with additives ... And finally, in Great Wall listened to customers and came up with a solution to this problem using turbocharging from Shanghai MHI Turbocharger Co. - the Chinese division of the Japanese company Mitsubishi, which inspires confidence to a certain extent. As a result, under the hood of the restyled Hover H3 lives the familiar 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine with the 4G63S4M index, which has received a number of improvements. The improved unit produces 177 hp. and 250 Nm of peak torque instead of the previous 116 hp. and 175 Nm (116-strong version is still on sale along with a 5-speed manual transmission), but derated for Russia up to 150 "horses". Now the SUV behaves much more recklessly than before - overtaking is definitely easier. For this, we should also thank the brand new six-speed manual transmission with "extended" gears.

The car was released in 2009 as a result of the restyling of the first generation of the Great Wall Hover, produced since 2005. And in July 2010, the Irito company first introduced the Hover H3 in Russia.

And the all-wheel drive connection is now carried out with a round knob on the center console near the gear lever. By the way, the location of other controls has also changed somewhat, which made their use even more convenient.

External changes to the Great Wall Hover N3 (2016-2017) are cosmetic in nature, while the overall silhouette of the car has remained almost the same. The front bumper has become more on the road, the stamping-beak has disappeared on the hood, and the radiator grill has become chrome-plated.

New lighting technology, which received a headlight range control and a new shape, made the Great Wall Hover H3 more modern and fresh. The ground clearance remained unchanged at 180 mm. The frame structure and modern all-wheel drive system still allow successfully storming off-road conditions.

Under the hood of the Hover H3, instead of the previous 2.4-liter engine, there is a 2.0-liter gasoline unit manufactured under license from Mitsubishi. Its power has slightly decreased and is 122 hp. against 130 mil from its predecessor.

But now the engine complies with the Euro-4 environmental standards and has better efficiency. The maximum speed of an SUV of 150 km / h does not make it possible to talk about the sprint qualities of the Great Wall Hover H3, but it is quite sufficient for confident movement on the highway.

On the Russian market, the car is offered in two trim levels - "Lux" and "Super Lux". Both versions have airbags, climate control, full power accessories (including an electric sunroof), ABS, 17-inch design wheels, heated front seats and other useful little things.

In the basic configuration, the price of the Great Wall Hover H3 was 885,000 rubles, and the cost of an SUV in the "Super Lux" version reached 899,000 rubles.

In the spring of 2014, sales of the updated Great Wall Hover H3 crossover began in Russia, which received a different front end design with a massive radiator grill, a modified bumper and retouched optics.

In addition, the restyled Great Wall Hover H3 (2016-2017) received other linings on the sidewalls, and its overall length increased by 30 mm. Inside the car, the design of the center console has slightly changed, where rectangular ventilation nozzles have replaced round ventilation nozzles.

In terms of technology, everything remains the same, however, the power of the 2.0-liter gasoline engine is now declared not 122, but 116 hp, but the torque of 175 Nm remains the same. At the same time, prices rose, and quite significantly. If for a pre-styling car they ask from 869,000 rubles, then an updated one in a similar version costs already 939,000 rubles.

Later, a modification appeared with a 2.0-liter turbo engine with a capacity of 150 hp. (250 Nm). There is also four-wheel drive by default and an uncontested 6-speed manual transmission. The cost of such a Great Wall Hover H3 New ranged from 989,000 to 1,029,000 rubles.
