In Europe, no one is waiting for Galant, but we (in the automotive sense), although not America, but, moreover, not Europe. Remembering the still beloved previous generations of Mitsubishi Galant, which we drove, we drive, and we will drive for a long time, everyone asked: “When?”. Russia is an important market for Mitsubishi, and our opinion cannot be ignored. Here we got what we wanted.

It is unlikely that the assessment of the design of the 9th generation Mitsubishi Galant will be news: it (especially in the front part) is strange, incomprehensible, and even simply ugly for some. A massive hump in the middle of the hood, an inexpressive grille, but most importantly - headlights! The headlights (where are you - the lovely squinted stripes of Mitsubishi Galant light elements of previous generations?) Have replaced some kind of quadrangles from the Volga.

Fourth, and most importantly: Mitsubishi Galant is very good on the go. The car handles just fine, although the steering wheel itself is not the most comfortable in girth. The engine and “box” work almost perfectly, although many will want more playfulness from such a machine. Moderately stiff suspension, providing decent comfort, is good both in a straight line and in corners. Mitsubishi bites into the road, maintaining good stability in any reasonable trajectory.

But I don’t want to drive a Mitsubishi Galant recklessly - it’s not easy to “ignite” it. The adaptive “automatic” adapts to the driver, but does not give him extra freedom.

America saw the new Mitsubishi Galant in April 2003, but we saw it only 3 years later. Residents of the US and Canada can choose a 3.8-liter 230-horsepower V6, but we only have a 2.4-liter 158-horsepower unit. So, American, handsome, sunroof, leather, cruise, xenon in all places, the 2.4 engine is the same as the Outlander, a bunch of pillows, a 4-speed automatic, a minimum of electronics, a pleasant interior, spacious and comfortable for all passengers. Under the hood, everything is simple, visible and convenient, I can even change a light bulb anywhere without finishing a cigarette. The seller didn’t lie, he didn’t eat the oil. By the way, I already had a Mitsubishi Lancer in 2005, I remember the oil zhor and the driver’s very comfortable fit. underestimated. When overtaking, he obeys, when changing lanes in the city he doesn’t get stupid. He won’t press you into a chair, but you won’t get lost either. The trunk is spacious, the interior is solid (of course it doesn’t look like that in a rag), everything is fine, everything is there. comfortable on the highway. The engine is not heard much, I would say moderately. The steering wheel is comfortable and turns well. - for a long time I didn’t drive over bumps and potholes with such joy, I didn’t hook it even once, in short, for our roads, that’s it. Music ROCKFORD, what can I say - having an additional musical education, good hearing and memory - this is the best sound I've heard in my whole life in cars. But the radio, by the way, doesn't catch very well, but it's easy to fix it with a good antenna, if you need it of course. The doors are heavy - they close nicely, you don’t notice speed on the highway, it’s better to have a radar detector. Wheels 215/60/16. Athermal windshield. Auto-corrector headlights. 8 airbags. After a three-year break in our country, sales of the Galant of the ninth generation have begun again, but it cannot be called absolutely new. Such a “Galant” has been produced in the USA for the domestic market for more than two years. To adapt it to Russian conditions, more than 300 changes had to be made to the design.

I have a friend who is a big fan of Galantes. He called his eighth-generation cars (and he had two in turn) “Japanese BMWs” and gently dusted off the “muscular” sides. He was not alone - many Russians liked the expressive design, powerful 6-cylinder engine, excellent handling and luxurious equipment "Mitsubishi Galant". Will my friend buy a ninth generation sedan? Do not know. The model has changed a lot...

Double digitization of the speedometer - in miles and in "km / h" - gives out the American origin of the model.

There is no such machine in Japan. Not listed. The Japanese themselves are still satisfied with the old "Galant" (practically the same that was officially sold in our country until 2003) and, it seems, are quite satisfied with it. However, on the Mitsubishi Motor Corporation website, in the “worldwide lineup” section, there is a mention that the new generation Mitsubishi Galant large sedan exists, but is produced “only for the local US market”. In more detail, since 2004 this model has been produced at the American Mitsubishi plant (in the town of Normal, Illinois), and it has not yet been delivered to other countries, except perhaps Canada and Mexico. And now Russia began to import this car, balancing on the verge of a “family” and business class.

Thus, the ninth “Mitsubishi Galant” can be called a novelty only conditionally. Using the words of I. Ilf and E. Petrov (“12 chairs”), we can say about this model: “The young one was no longer young.” Personally, I first saw the new “Galant” on New Year's Eve 2005. And not somewhere in Detroit, but in Moscow, at the opening of another Mitsubishi dealership. The snow-covered car was parked behind the salon, away from the exhibition display and parade speeches. In response to my questions, employees of the Rolf company (the official representative of Mitsubishi in Russia) made scary eyes and put their fingers to their lips: “Shh, it’s too early to talk about it, the decision on sales has not yet been made, wait and see ...”

I had to wait almost two years. Of these, according to a press release, it took a year and a half to adapt the machine to Russian conditions. A “comprehensive refinement of all components and assemblies” was carried out, more than 300 changes were made to the design of the car. But the noticeable differences between the adapted “Galant” and the American one can be counted on the fingers.

The interior does not stand out with special advantages compared to competing models.

The shape of the front bumper and grille has changed (undoubtedly for the better). The headlights and taillights have been updated (so as not to violate our rules, because a different standard for lighting equipment has been adopted overseas). The clearance of the car has increased (up to 165 mm), in accordance with this, the suspension characteristics have been reconfigured. The engine was adapted to work in cold climates and on 92-octane gasoline. It cost the motor the loss of two "horses". In the Russian version, its power is 158 hp, and 160-horsepower Galants are sold in the USA. The speedometer and odometer now count not only miles, but also kilometers (double digitization). The radio receiver of the standard audio system received a “European” tuning step, and the temperature on the climate control is set on the Celsius scale, not Fahrenheit.

That, in fact, is all. And where are the other 290-odd differences? I have no doubt that they are. But ordinary buyers most likely will not notice all the other nuances. Yes, and no need. It is quite enough to assure sellers that the car is comprehensively adapted. And in the event of a malfunction, problems with warranty service should not arise.

As mentioned above, this car is far from new for the USA, and our overseas colleagues (for example, from the expert agency “Consumer Report”) have already managed to suck all the bones in it and carefully put them on the shelves. Their verdict is as follows: reliability is above average in the class, failure statistics are minimal, and the technique does not cause any complaints. But the “degree of customer satisfaction” (spoiled Americans also have such a parameter for evaluating a car) leaves much to be desired. They don't like the new "Galant" for some reason. Even despite the fact that during passive safety tests (according to the NHTSA version adopted in the USA), he was awarded the highest award - five stars.

Of the obvious shortcomings of the car, American experts mention only the excessive noise of the base 4-cylinder engine (a 6-cylinder version is also sold in the USA). On this I strongly disagree with them. When I personally got acquainted with the car, I didn’t notice anything like that (believe me, I listened carefully, even turned off the music). So, I dare say: the car is very quiet in all engine operating modes, aerodynamic noise and the rustling of tires on asphalt also do not annoy. Perhaps among the changes made to the design was improved sound insulation?

But there is no version of the Galant with a 3.8-liter V6 (which overseas experts even consider “too powerful”) that is dear to the American heart, and most likely will not be in Russia. It's a pity. The motor is very good, lively, although too, in my opinion, gluttonous. I suspect that the refusal to supply it was due solely to the high cost of the modification with the V6. After all, even a “basic” car with an in-line “four”, crossing the ocean, rises in price by exactly $10,000.

Watch out, leaf fall!

I DID NOT HAVE TIME to park the test “Mitsubishi Galant” in the editorial parking lot, as colleagues pounced with questions:

– Well, how do you like the new “Galant”, did you like it?

- I do not even know. It is hard to say...

I really (without a hint of coquetry) can not answer this question unambiguously. On the move, the car makes a very good impression. Spacious comfortable lounge. Excellent sound insulation (it's not a sin to repeat this again). Excellent suspension work and understandable (and therefore safe) behavior on the road. "Galant" perfectly obeys the steering wheel and readily responds to pressing the accelerator. The adapted 4-cylinder engine, even with a slight loss of power, cannot be called a weakling. Perhaps, I am ready to agree with the American specialists that the 230-horsepower V6 in this case is more of an excess than a necessity. The dynamics of the car and without it enough.

And most importantly - "Galant" holds the road very tenaciously. Sometimes even unrealistically tenacious. Wet asphalt. Fast dangerous turn. The roll is large enough, it seems that the suspension travel is fully selected. And if the turn turns out to be even steeper? I add gas and at the same time turn the steering wheel, trying to provoke a slip. No matter how! The car, accelerating, willingly “dives” into a steeper trajectory. All four wheels at the same time maintain tight contact with the road. Excellent! It is possible to break the car into a slip only on a carpet of yellow fallen leaves. Sometimes they are worse than ice. Before them, sometimes all the tricks of the designers of the undercarriage pass ...

Of course, in such a commendable behavior of the car there is a merit of both a complex multi-link independent suspension (both front and rear), and Yokohama tires installed on the Russian versions of the Galant. By the way, in America, if my memory serves me, “Galant” is equipped with tires of one of the most affordable “Goodyear” models. Another point in favor of “our” car.

These are all pluses. What about the cons? Firstly, it is a sluggish, inexpressive (in my opinion) appearance. Secondly, a somewhat old-fashioned unpretentious interior. And thirdly, the relative (compared to competitors) poor configuration. And not only basic.

Adapting "Galant" to Russian operating conditions, engineers made more than 300 changes to its design.

In our market, “Galant” is sold in two versions of equipment - “Intense” and more expensive “Instyle”. There is no third. Both options include a 2.4-liter engine in combination with a 4-speed automatic transmission (with manual shifting), 16-inch alloy wheels, ABS, cruise control and the simplest climate control. In general, the minimum that you won’t surprise anyone on cars of this class today.

The Instyle comes with a power glass sunroof, leather seats, a power driver's seat, and a classy Rockford Fosgate audio system. Everything else looks pretty modest. But the new “Galant” will have to compete in its price segment with “Hyundai NF”, “Toyota Camry”, “Nissan Teana”... The list can be continued. The company of competitors is serious. In addition, “Mitsubishi Galant” is the oldest (according to the year of development) car on this list ... However, in our market, “Galant” has a huge advantage: you can come and buy it. Straightaway. At least now dealers have "live" cars. For some, this factor will probably be decisive. And my opinion: “Mitsubishi Galant” is a great car for those who are looking for just a reliable means of transportation in a car. My friend, a fan of the previous "Galant", is unlikely to be delighted with the new one.

RETROSPECTIVE

Models of past generations

In Russia, the Galantas of the previous two generations were officially sold. The seventh “Mitsubishi Galant” (photo above) appeared on our market back in 1993 (the same year that the world premiere of the model took place). And in 1997, it was replaced by another model (photo below), which was supplied to our country until 2003.

It happened that due to poor visibility, the right wheels caught the side of the road, where the edge could put the car into a skid. And probably due to the weight of Galant, this did not happen.

As for skidding, the car keeps the wheels on the slippery surface for a long time. But if it has already gone, then it has gone ... It was possible to break the car into a deep skid, but this was done on purpose. In normal mode, everything happens predictably. There is certainly a tendency to demolition.
