Earlier it was reported that the 4x4 NG should be put on the conveyor in late autumn and early winter 2017. The 1.8-liter engine does not look much different from the current VAZ sixteen-valve engines. But this is a new motor, and its own design.

The new motor is designed for Vesta, XRAY and Largus models. On the block of cylinders there is an additional platform for drawing a serial number. There is no official information yet, but it is easy to guess that we are talking about Niva. The cylinder block is unified with that used on the current 1.6‑liter VAZ‑21126, -21127 and -21129 engines. The same height and the same diameter of the cylinders. The working volume was raised by increasing the piston stroke from 75.6 to 84.0 mm. Crankshaft - with an increased crank radius and other counterweights. To reduce friction losses, the diameters of the connecting rod journals of the crankshaft were reduced from 47.8 to 43 mm. The oil channels have become different - the so-called drilling from the neck to the neck allows to reduce the cost of production, and less chips and dirt remain in the oil channels. On the end of the shaft there is a mark of classes of main and connecting rod journals for precise adjustment of the liners in diameter, that is, for selective assembly.

Additional oil channels to the phase regulator are made in the cylinder head. Lightweight valves are from Mahle.

The cylinder block and crankshaft are produced at AVTOVAZ. But a lightweight connecting rod and piston group is purchased from Federal Mogul - Vostok (Togliatti). The piston skirt is graphite coated and the skirt has been reshaped to increase the contact patch. The rings are the same as on other motors of the family, only the oil scraper ones are chrome-plated. The height of the top land has been increased by 1.3 mm, and now the so-called compression height is 26.7 mm versus 25.4 mm for 1.6-liter engines. The price for increasing the stroke of the piston at the same height of the block is a reduction in the length of the connecting rod from 133 to 128 mm. The lower head of the connecting rod is made using the so-called discontinuous technology - like the current 1.6‑liter engines.

Phase adjustment required modernization of the lubrication system. Indigenous bearings with an oil-distributing groove of variable section are installed - to reduce oil consumption. For the first time, a foreign-made oil pump appeared on a VAZ engine - the South Korean GMB. The performance of domestic pumps is 34–38 l / min at an engine speed of 6000 rpm, and GMB produces 54–60 liters. The pump body is aluminum, not cast iron. The cross section of the oil intake, of course, is increased. The aluminum sump of the engine crankcase has a flange for mating with the clutch housing, which increases the rigidity of the power unit. The volume of the oil sump is 4.4 liters versus 3.2 liters for the 1.6 engine.

The water pump is also Korean, with solid bearings and seals that guarantee reliability. It is better than serial VAZ ones: among other things, performance is higher. The plastic intake module is made by the Togliatti company Motor-Super. The gas-dynamic characteristics of the intake tract are optimized for the new engine. The advanced finning of the module made it possible to reduce noise. The engine management system does not work with mass air flow readings, but calculates parameters through temperature and pressure. Therefore, there is a slot for the corresponding sensor in the intake module.

Cylinder head. The camshafts are made in Korea. The drive disk and the phase sensor are clearly visible, allowing you to track the position of the intake shaft.


The cylinder head is of domestic production. The casting has additional channels through which oil enters the phase regulator, as well as sockets for the regulator control solenoid and phase sensor. A drive disk is fixed on the intake camshaft, tracking its position. Significantly redesigned water jacket for better cooling of the combustion chamber. In addition, the resistance to liquid pumping was reduced. The gas channels have been modified for better filling of the cylinders and intensification of the vortex motion of the air-fuel charge.

South Korean-made camshafts are supplied by Toyota Tsusho. They are hollow inside, and the cams are made by powder metallurgy. Such a camshaft is much lighter than the former, cast iron. Mahle valves are also lightweight, with 5 mm stems. Crackers, guides, valve stem seals - of the appropriate size. The purpose of the relief is to reduce the inertia of the system, which makes it possible to open the valve more quickly.

The camshafts are made in Korea. The drive disk and the phase sensor are clearly visible, allowing you to track the position of the intake shaft.


A hydraulic-type phase control mechanism is installed on the intake camshaft. Its design is traditional, but the dimensions are for our motor. The supplier is the German company INA. The shafts are driven by a toothed belt manufactured by Continental. According to factory specialists, it will serve 180,000 km.

From this approach, engineers, accustomed to saving every penny and hardly knocking out even minimal improvements for the ancient structure, were frankly stunned, although the project for a radical renovation for the Swede was promptly prepared. There were also plans - bend your fingers! - the introduction of a steering rack instead of a worm gear and an electric drive of the transfer case (this would allow removing a pair of “transmission” levers from the passenger compartment), a complete restructuring of the climate system, which would allow us to abandon the ancient “sliders” by switching to rotary knobs ...

But when the crisis broke out, the modernization project was recognized as economically unjustified. And it was decided: let the current Lada 4x4 be produced until 2017 (unless, of course, demand collapses), and only when the Niva-3 debuts will the old woman be sent to rest. Only the change of interior was recognized as justified (the new salon will be shown to the public in a year), the refinement of the "climate" and small "technical changes" like other wheel bearings and door locks. And nothing more.

However, the new engine may well appear under the hood of the “old Niva”! Known for its 1.8-liter engines for the Priora, the Togliatti company Super-Auto has prepared a project for finalizing the old engine: increasing the working volume to 1800 “cubes” (by installing a new crankshaft and increasing the piston stroke) made it possible to increase power to 93 hp and torque to 150 Nm.

Also, the “super-avtovtsy” realized another old dream of the VAZ workers - they got rid of the central differential lock levers and the downshift. But Andersson believes that the car of the 1977 model needs to be finalized! With an eye on the current and future Shnivy. Which will greatly complicate development. That is why "Niva-3" at the current stage is just a couple of slow-moving layouts, on which proportions, layout and design are being worked out. So far, the Russians want the third-generation SUV to resemble the current Lada 4x4 in size, and at the same time be produced in both 3-door and 5-door versions.

With the new Chevrolet Niva, the situation is much clearer - the second-generation car is almost ready. By the way, VAZ sources claim that the Americans were given the rights only to the Niva brand, in Latin. While AvtoVAZ continues to be the owner of the trademark written in Cyrillic. But GM-AvtoVAZ claims that both spellings belong only to them.

The problem could be resolved radically. Renault-Nissan allocates money, and AvtoVAZ buys out GM's share, thanks to which Niva gets rid of the Chevrolet prefix forever (the shares of the GM-AvtoVAZ joint venture are divided in half: one half - from the Russian auto giant, the second - from the General Motors concern). But the Americans, despite the recent capitulation, refused to leave the joint venture! How they refused to allocate money for the development of the plant ...

Because of this, the creation of the second generation Chevrolet Niva stalled. No, contrary to the statements of the GM press service, the project is by no means frozen, the engineers are not fired, but it is impossible to bring the car to the assembly line without proper funding, which means that instead of full-fledged development, there is sluggish floundering. And the extension of the release of the existing Shnivy for an indefinite period.

But! Firstly, the enterprise is obliged to stop assembling the current Chevrolet Niva until the end of 2016, when the Vehicle Type Approval (OTTA) ends. Secondly, the SUV will have to ... significantly rise in price.
